OK, so… about a month ago – I guess – we got in our postbox an interesting brochure about a cycling ride, the Prudential Ride, which was going to take place on the streets of London. We got that because it was going to affect our borough and some streets would be closed at the first weekend of August. I was quite surprised to receive such a neat and well-prepared material about the event and how it might impact the lives of the people around. We’d never get anything like that in Brazil, perhaps only a piece of news on the local newspaper, but it still would get a lot of people upset because they didn’t know about it in advance.

OK, então… cerca de um mês atrás – eu acho – recebemos na correspondência um folheto interessante sobre um passeio ciclístico, a Prudential Ride, que iria acontecer nas ruas de Londres. Recebemos porque iria afetar nossa vizinhança e algumas ruas seriam fechadas no primeiro fim de semana de agosto. Eu fiquei um tanto surpreso em receber um material tão bem preparado e organizado sobre o evento e como iria impactar as vidas das pessoas por perto. Nós nunca receberíamos algo assim no Brasil, talvez apenas uma notícia no jornal local, mas ainda assim muita gente ficaria de cara pois foi pega de surpresa.

Well, it was really in advance for me and I ended up forgetting about it. But one or two days prior to the event BT Sport was showing highlights of last year’s ride which reminded me all about it – and also made me change some plans for the weekend. It was nice to see on TV the roads we walk everyday being sliced by full speed cyclists and I almost regretted having plans for the day and not being able to take some pictures.

Bem, foi bem adiantado para mim e eu acabei esquecendo disso tudo. Mas um ou dois dias antes do evento a BT Sport estava mostrando destaques da corrida do ano passado e me fez lembrar que estava chegando – e também me fez mudar alguns planos para o fim de semana. Foi legal ver na TV as ruas que caminho todos os dias sendo cortadas por ciclistas a todo vapor e quase me arrependi de ter planos para o dia e não poder tirar algumas fotos.

The day came and I was trying to not think much about it because I wouldn’t be able to check the main race. I had my camera with me as it was a beautiful day and I might have some good opportunities to take nice pictures. The moment we left home and hit the street we could see some of the riders passing by the high street. I took the camera out and decided to shoot a bit…

O dia chegou e eu estava tentando não pensar muito sobre isso pois não poderia curtir a corrida principal. Estava com a minha câmera já que o dia estava bonito e talvez teria boas oportunidades de tirar algumas fotos bacanas. No momento que saímos de casa e chegamos na rua já vimos alguns ciclistas passando pela rua principal. Tirei a câmera da mochila e decidi clicar um pouco…

It was quite hard at the beginning because I had no experience whatsoever in taking photos of bike riders. The layout of the road with the cones were a bit challenging too – should I avoid them in the composition? Where should I stay to get a nice shot? – and more and more questions were popping out – What about the angle? How the hell can I set the new camera to focus at such a speed? Well, live and learn… Just shoot and try different things without worrying too much, it’s not the main thing of the day anyway! Let’s try to get some nice moments at least…

Foi um tanto difícil no início pois eu não tinha nenhuma experiência em fotografar ciclistas. O desenho das ruas com os cones também foi um pouco desafiador – deveria evitá-los na coposição? Onde eu deveria ficar pra conseguir uma foto legal? – e cada vez mais perguntas foram aparecendo – e o ângulo? Como é que eu vou configurar a câmera nova pra focar em tal velocidade? Bem, vivendo e aprendendo… Só clica e tenta algumas coisas diferentes sem se preocupar muito, afinal nem é a coisa principal do dia! Vamos tentar pelo menos capturar alguns bons momentos…

Another thing that I was quite surprised were the disabled riders with those modified bikes flashing down the street. That was so cool! And it was really interesting to see it depicted on the cover of the brochure as well!

Outra coisa que fiquei um tanto surpreso foi ver os ciclistas deficientes com aquelas bicicletas modificadas passando voando pela rua. Show de bola! Também foi muito interessante ver isso estampado na capa do folheto!

By the time we got to the main crossing we were already running a bit late for our appointment, but it was so nice to see the commonly busy road filled with bikers. A totally new perspective of the area that was almost inimaginable!

Quando chegamos no cruzamento principal nós já estávamos ficando atrasados para o nosso compromisso, mas foi tão legal ver a rua que normalmente é congestionada ficar cheia de ciclistas. Uma perspectiva totalmente nova da área que foi algo quase inimaginável!

Going towards Putney Bridge I started to visualize a little bit better how to get more interesting photos. Different people working, cheering, or just walking by set a new atmosphere. The nicest moment was when a dad who was racing stopped by the railing to greet his children holding posters of support. Brilliant!

Chegando na Putney Bridge eu comecei a visualizar um pouco melhor como conseguir umas fotos mais interessantes. Pessoas diferentes trabalhando, vibrando ou simplesmente caminhando logo ao lado da rua criaram um ambiente novo. O momento mais legal foi quando um pai que estava correndo parou na divisória pra dar um alô aos filhos que estavam segurando cartazes de apoio. Maravilha!

Getting into Putney Bridge I thought I would get some fantastic photos, but that didn’t go as I expected. Partly because by that time we were getting really late for our appointment and I couldn’t take the time to find a good spot to take pictures, try to avoid the cones and cars on the bridge, try to get St. Margaret’s Church and Fulham Pallace at the background… I wish I had had more time to study the situation to find the best angle to shoot. Well, I did what I could…

Entrando na Putney Bridge eu pensei que conseguiria umas fotos fantásticas, mas não saiu como eu esperava. Parcialmente porque naquela hora já estávamos bem atrasados para nosso compromisso e eu não teria tempo de achar um bom lugar pra fotografar, tentar evitar os cones e carros na ponte, tentar encaixar a igreja e o palácio no fundo… Quem dera eu tivesse mais tempo pra estudar a situação e encontrar o melhor ângulo para fotografar. Bem, fiz o que pude…

At the end of the day it was a great experience to see that I need to try new things and that I am capable of getting nice results even struggling to set up the new camera doing something that I have never done before. I’m sure some of these pictures are quite good, not great, just good enough… What do you think?

No fim das contas foi uma ótima experiência para ver que eu preciso tentar novas coisas e que sou capaz de conseguir resultados legais mesmo penando em configurar a câmera nova fazendo algo que nunca havia feito antes. Tenho certeza que algumas destas fotos ficaram boas, não ótimas, mas boas o suficiente… o que você acha?
