As a Brazilian it’s quite common to hear the year only really starts after Carnival, but last year – meaning 2019 – we went to a new year’s celebration that although it was February, it was a new year, and many people were dressed differently in a festive way, yet it was not carnival. We went to Leicester Square to check the Chinese New Year’s celebration and experience a bit of that culture we don’t know much of.

Como brasileiro é um tanto comum ouvir que o ano somente começa depois do carnaval, mas no ano passado – entenda 2019 – nós fomos para uma celebração de ano novo que embora fosse em fevereiro, era um novo ano, e muitas pessoas estavam vestidas diferentemente em um modo festivo, mas não era carnaval. Nós fomos para Leicester Square para checar as celebrações do ano novo chinês e curtir um pouco dessa cultura que não conhecemos muito.

On the 5th of February in 2019 started the year of the pig, the earth pig more precisely. I don’t really know what that implies, I just know that the celebrations took place on the 10th, Sunday, and we went to the centre to get some cool photos of that.

No dia 5 de fevereiro de 2019 começou o ano do porco, o porco da terra mais precisamente. Eu não sei muito o que isso implica, só sei que as celebrações aconteceram no dia 10, domingo, e nós fomos para o centro para tirar umas fotos legais.

Of course there were some representations of pigs around, but the main figure we saw everywhere were dragons. And they were incredibly beautiful! The attention to detail in matching colours and building expressions are magnificent. It was marvellous!

Claro que haviam algumas representações de porcos, mas a figura principal que vimos por toda a parte eram os dragões. E eles eram incrivelmente bonitos! A atenção ao detalhe ao combinar cores e construir expressões eram magníficas. Maravilhoso!

A bit of drizzle perhaps scared some people away, but everyone at the parade were having fun. I didn’t know what to expect really. In the end it was a different experience. I guess I thought it could be something slightly bigger considering the size of Chinese community living here, but still it was very impressive to see all those people celebrating in a great atmosphere in a considerable large blocked area right in the heart of London. Well done!

Um pouco de garoa talvez espantou algumas pessoas, mas todos no desfile estavam se divertindo. Eu não sabia o que esperar na verdade. No fim foi uma experiência diferente. Acho que esperava algo ligeiramente maior considerando o tamanho da comunidade Chinese morando aqui, mais ainda foi bem impressionante ver todas aquelas pessoas celebrando em um ótimo ambiente numa área bloqueada consideravelmente grande bem no coração de Londres. Muito bem!
